Cal Sturgeon (they/them), Senior Consultant, is a seasoned philanthropy professional with expertise in internal fundraising program assessments, donor segmentation strategies, and prospect development infrastructure. They bring a data-informed and justice-centered approach to building fundraising systems that enhance performance, equity, and clarity.
Cal spent a decade at the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation, where they led the modernization of the prospect development shop. Their work included innovative research and scoring techniques, portfolio optimization, data analytics, and improved communication channels with front-line fundraisers, contributing to increased fundraising outcomes.
As a consultant, Cal provides strategic support to nonprofit organizations through internal assessments and the design of actionable, equitable fundraising strategies. Their services include dynamic technical and supervisory coaching for nonprofit leaders and emerging leaders, helping teams build sustainable, data-informed practices.
They currently serve as the Assistant Director of Prospect Development at City of Hope, bringing their expertise to a leading healthcare organization committed to transformative philanthropy.
A dedicated volunteer leader, Cal has served on the Apra Board of Directors since 2022, where they’ve held leadership roles in governance, technology, and conference planning. Apra is an international association advancing professionals at the intersection of fundraising and data, including prospect intelligence, data science, relationship management, and campaign planning. Cal’s work reflects a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a consistent focus on advancing practices through a lens of justice and belonging.
